There is little doubt that proper diet is a leading factor in having a healthy heart and healthy life.

Many of us get confused about what a healthy heart diet is; we have to deal with a variety of diet information coming from many different sources. But, often this information is contradictory.

One book or research article tells you to exclude from your diet food or drink that contains chocolate, caffeine, or wine; while another article will recommend these same products as good for your health. So, in this article we will take a look at what you can do to improve your diet and enjoy a healthier life style.

First of all, you need to select a dependable and reliable information source where you can get all the necessary facts for putting together your heart healthy diet.

It would be best to consult your doctor about such a diet, because not all diets are equally good for your health and weight loss. Also, other contributing health issues might require specific dietary modifications that your doctor will understand best.

Try to stick to the proved dietary facts announced by such organizations as American Heart Association or World Health Organization. These organizations not only carry out their own medical research, but they also monitor researched carried out by other trustworthy medical publications and organizations.

Next, create two lists of the foods you eat: Your food friends and Your food enemies.

You will certainly include such foods as fruits, vegetables or whole grains in your food friend list. They are rich with vitamins and fiber, which is great for your heart and blood vessels.

Fish is another food friend you should include in your diet at least twice each week. Enrich your meal with lean meat, vegetable oils, such as olive or corn oil, and low fat dietary products.

Now, among the worst food enemies of your heart health are the foods containing trans fats or saturated fat and cholesterol. Most fast food products, snacks, chips, cookies, ice cream, etc., contain such fats. You should start cutting down your consumption of those foods and replace them with healthier options.

Another important thing to do is to cut down your salt intake. Eating too much salt can invoke high blood pressure, which increases the risks of developing various heart diseases and even having a heart attack or a brain stroke.

As you may see, putting together a nutritious and heart healthy diet is not an easy thing to do, but it sure can be very rewarding. A healthy heart and many years of life are your end goal, thus it is worth putting forward some effort!
